In My Defense – End of Season

By Duncan Smith

I originally compiled this document at the halfway point of the season, I felt it produced some useful data so I have returned to compile a full season version of that week 8 article. When looking at the figures remember that I haven’t manipulated them based on starts or games missed (things like starts are largely superfluous in IDP as it doesn’t impact on a players snap count as much as it does on offense), this is just the un-manipulated data as of the end of the regular season.

Before we get to the individual team breakdowns I will look at some of the data that jumps out.

Time for my snap decisions.

INTERCEPTIONS

Miami’s Xavien Howard finishes the season as the league leader with 10 interceptions. This also gave him the biggest percentage share of his team’s interceptions, with 55.5% of the Dolphins’ 18 interceptions.

Narrowly missing out on the top spot is New England CB J.C. Jackson, who finished with 9 interceptions for a 50% share of his team’s 18 total.

Joining Miami and New England with 18 team interceptions are New Orleans and Pittsburgh.

In terms of the lowest totals, both individual and team totals go to the Texans. CB’s Vernon Hargreaves III, Bradley Roby, and DE J.J. Watt all managed to record a single interception for a team total of 3 interceptions. Only three other teams failed to record at least ten interceptions, Carolina (7), Detroit (7), and Philadelphia (8).

In terms of the lowest percentage share of a teams interceptions for a team leader, that is jointly held by three Saints players (S’s Malcolm Jenkins, Marcus Williams, and CB Janoris Jenkins), who managed three interceptions each for a 16.7% share of the Saints 18 interceptions. Three San Francisco players, CB’s Jason Verrett, Jamar Taylor, and LB Fred Warner managed two INT’s each for a 16.7% share of the 49ers 12 total.

SACKS

Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt finished top of the sack pile this year, he recorded 15 sacks for a 26.8% share of the Steelers 56 sacks.

The Rams Aaron Donald fell short of the top spot by 1.5 sacks, finishing with 13.5 for a 25.5% share of the Rams 53 total.

Atlanta’s Deion Jones finished with the lowest individual total for a team leader. He only recorded 4.5 all year for a 15.5% share of the Falcons 29 total.

Detroit’s Romeo Okwara finished with the biggest percentage share of his team’s total. His 10 sacks gave him an impressive 41.7% share of the Lions 24 total. No other player managed 40% of their team’s total.

Two Buffalo players shared the lowest percentage share of a team’s total, A.J. Klein and Mario Addison each recorded 5 sacks for a 13.2% share each of the Bills’ 38 sacks.

Pittsburgh leads the league in total sacks with 56. Three teams failed to record twenty, they are Tennessee (19), Jacksonville (18), and bottom of the pile is Cincinnati with only 17.

TACKLES (Combined)

Texans linebacker Zach Cunningham has the highest total of combined tackles with 164. This gave him a 14.9% share of Houston’s 1097 combined tackles.

Cunningham only just missed out on the largest percentage share too, this went to Dallas linebacker Jaylon Smith, his 154 combined tackles gave him a 15% share of the Cowboys’ 1028 total combined tackles.

The lowest total for a team leader went to the Steelers Minkah Fitzpatrick who only managed 79. He also recorded the lowest share of team tackles, managing only 8.2% of Pittsburgh’s 962.

Houston and the New York Jets finished with the most amount of combined tackles on the year. Both teams finished with 1097 combined tackles.

New Orleans finished bottom of the team list, only recording 893 over the season.

TACKLES (Solo)

Zach Cunnigham adds most solo tackles to his combined tackles crown. He recorded 106 of Houstons 729 for a share of 14.5%. He is also the only player to go over 100 solo tackles on the season.

Chicago’s Roquan Smith narrowly pips Cunningham for the highest percentage with 14.6% (98) of the Bears 672 total.

Cleveland’s B.J. Goodson has the lowest individual total with only 59 of the Browns 674 total.

Despite managing one more tackle than Goodson, Pittsburgh’s Minkah Fitzpatrick shares the bottom spot for percentage share, both players managing 8.7% of their team’s totals. The Steelers recorded 690 total solo tackles.

The Cardinals lead the league in total solo tackles with 736 while Carolina finishes 32nd with 588.

TACKLES (For a Loss)

Roquan Smith takes the top prize here with 18 on the season. This also allowed him to finish with the highest percentage share of a team’s total, recording 28.6% of Chicago’s 63 total.

Three Cincinnati players tied for a share of the lowest for a league leader, LB’s Germaine Pratt, Josh Bynes, and DE Sam Hubbard each managed 5 tackles for a loss. Giving each of them an 11.1% share of the Bengals 45 total.

The Bills Mario Addison finished with the lowest percentage share, his 7 tackles for a loss were good for 9.7% of the Bills 72 total.

The Steelers led the league in team total with 103, the only team to record over 100 tackles for a loss.

Cincinnati was one of only three teams to record under 50 tackles for a loss, their 45 came last behind Kansas with 47 and New England with 48.

FORCED FUMBLES

Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey finished top with 8 forced fumbles. That worked out at a 32% share of Baltimore’s league-high 25 total forced fumbles.

25 total forced fumbles were a league-high by quite some margin. The next highest total was 17, held by the Jets, Falcons, and Browns.

The league leaders in terms of percentage share went to Arizona’s Haasan Riddick (6 of 15) and New England’s Shilique Calhoun (2 of 5). It worked out at a 40% share for both.

Despite coming out top in team share Calhoun finished bottom in terms of a team lead. He joined another twenty players who led their teams in forced fumbles with 2. I have listed them all further down.

Three of those twenty-one players are Buffalo Bills, LB A.J. Klein, S Jordan Poyer, and DE Jerry Hughes each had a league-low 13.3% share of their team’s total forced fumbles (15).

The Patriots finished last in team forced fumbles, managing only 5 over the season. They were one of five teams to record under 10 forced fumbles. The others being the Texans (9), Raiders (8), Saints (7), and the Chargers (6).

PASSES DEFENDED

Perhaps unsurprisingly after recording the most interceptions, Miami’s Xavien Howard also recorded the most passes defended. He managed to defend 20 out of the Dolphins 76 total for a 26.3% share.

The highest individual share went to Travon Diggs of Dallas who recorded 30.4% of the Cowboys’ 46 passes defended, which works out at 14 total.

The Saints and Steelers finished top in total passes defended with 84 each.

Six players finished with 7 passes defended. Three of those players were on the Texans and had individual shares of 14% of the team total of 50.

Atlanta and Detroit had identical figures in this category, the Falcons A.J. Terrell and the Lions Amani Oruwariye both finished with 7 of their teams 51 passes defended, giving them a joint league-low share of 13.7%.

Philadelphia’s Rodney McLeod also finished with 7 passes defended but the Eagles also finished with a league-low 43 total. This meant that Mcleod’s share finished at 16.3%.

Below you will find the league leaders and league lowest (for a team leader) in each category before the individual team breakdowns. Percentages are the amount that an individual player has recorded of his team’s total.
